PRESS RELEASE: McCarthy Gallery Becomes Member of Gallery Climate Coalition

McCarthy Gallery is pleased to announce that it has officially awarded and joined the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) as a member, affirming the gallery’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices, environmental responsibility, and the cultural sector’s role in climate action.

As a GCC member, McCarthy Gallery aligns itself with a global network of galleries, art institutions, artists, and art-sector organizations dedicated to reducing carbon emissions, adopting best practices for sustainability, and fostering systemic change within the art world. Membership offers access to tools, resources, peer collaboration, and guidance on emissions measurement, sustainable shipping, climate-conscious travel, and more.

“Joining the GCC is not merely symbolic for us — it’s a practical decision,” says [Fono, Curator & Director, McCarthy Gallery]. “We recognise that the art sector must do more than exhibit beauty; it must also lead by example in protecting our planet. Through GCC membership, we pledge to actively work towards reducing our environmental footprint and to contribute meaningfully to broader climate goals.”

Gallery Climate Coalition is a registered charity whose mission is to embed climate-conscious practices within the art sector. Its resources include a carbon calculator tailored to galleries, guidelines for climate-aware operations, case studies, and workshops for capacity-building.

McCarthy Gallery intends to take the following steps as part of its GCC commitments:

  • Begin measuring and monitoring the gallery’s annual carbon emissions

  • Adopt more sustainable materials and practices in packaging, shipping, and installation

  • Optimize energy usage in gallery operations and exhibit design

  • Encourage climate-conscious travel and transportation policies

  • Share progress and lessons with peers and the public via reports or updates
