Investing in Original Art for Your Business: A Smart Financial and Cultural Decision

Claim Eligible Tax Benefits While Enhancing Your Workplace

The Australian Government's $20,000 instant asset write-off allows eligible small businesses to claim the full cost of qualifying assets—including original artworks—as an immediate tax deduction in the year of purchase. An original artwork acquired for your office, boardroom, reception area or commercial premises may be eligible, provided it satisfies the relevant Australian Taxation Office requirements and is used within your business.

For example, an original painting purchased for $18,000 and installed in your workplace may be fully deductible in your 2025–26 tax return, rather than being depreciated over several years. Importantly, the threshold applies per eligible artwork, not per business. Multiple qualifying purchases under the threshold may each be claimed separately, subject to your individual tax circumstances.

Following the Australian Government's May 2026 Budget announcement, the $20,000 instant asset write-off is expected to become a permanent measure from 1 July 2026. Businesses purchasing before 30 June may still benefit in the current financial year, making this an ideal time to discuss opportunities with your accountant.

Understanding the Opportunity

At McCarthy Gallery, we regularly work with business owners seeking to transform their professional spaces through meaningful investment in original art.

From law firms and architecture practices to medical clinics, corporate offices, hotels and hospitality venues, carefully selected artworks do far more than decorate a wall—they create identity, inspire conversation and reflect the values of an organisation.

When clients discover that these acquisitions may also qualify for significant tax advantages, it often changes the conversation entirely.

While McCarthy Gallery does not provide taxation advice, we encourage every purchaser to seek independent professional guidance to determine eligibility under current Australian tax legislation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this apply to original artworks?

Yes. Original artworks may qualify as depreciating assets under Australian tax law when acquired and used within a business environment, subject to the relevant legislation and ATO requirements.

Who may be eligible?

Generally, businesses operating with an ABN and meeting the applicable turnover thresholds may be eligible for the instant asset write-off. Eligibility depends on individual circumstances and current legislation.

Can multiple artworks be purchased?

The threshold applies to each eligible asset individually. Businesses may purchase multiple qualifying artworks, with each assessed separately under the applicable tax rules.

Do previously owned artworks qualify?

Depending on the legislation in force and the nature of the purchase, both new and previously owned original artworks may qualify. Professional taxation advice should always be obtained.

What happens if an artwork exceeds $20,000?

Artworks above the threshold may still qualify for depreciation through other provisions of the tax system. Your accountant can advise on the most appropriate treatment.

Why Businesses Choose Original Art

Original art is more than an expense—it is an investment in your workplace culture and brand identity.

An exceptional artwork can:

  • Create a memorable first impression for clients and visitors.

  • Reflect professionalism, innovation and cultural engagement.

  • Inspire employees and enhance workplace wellbeing.

  • Differentiate your business from competitors.

  • Potentially appreciate in value over time.

Unlike office furniture or décor that quickly dates, quality contemporary art can remain relevant and meaningful for decades.
