Artists statement:
Shimmer and Shake' Series 2025 - 2026
My paintings originate from the diversity of nature and the infusion of colour and light. Each paintings have its own unique colour palette and application. Oil paint is applied to the canvas by a variety of different sized plastering tools with bold and rhythmic strokes echoing the movement of nature.
Steve Oatley is a contemporary Australian artist whose expressive oil paintings explore nature through colour, light and movement. His Shimmer and Shake series (2025–2026) features vibrant colour palettes and richly textured compositions. Using plastering tools of various sizes, Oatley applies oil paint with bold, rhythmic strokes that echo the energy and movement of the natural world.
Our Guest Artists are invited artists whose work brings a distinctive perspective, practice or cultural voice to the McCarthy Gallery program. They may be emerging, established or internationally recognised artists, selected to introduce new audiences, enrich our exhibition program and create opportunities for collectors to discover exceptional work.
