FONO MCCARTHY

Fono McCarthy, a seasoned professional in the Australian art scene, brings over two decades of expertise in advising individual collectors and consulting for prestigious entities such as Hilton, Westin hotels and resorts, and Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand and architects and interior designers. As a champion of Pacific contemporary and Indigenous art, Fono plays a pivotal role in promoting and supporting artists from Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands.

 

He is the founding director of McCarthy Gallery and the chief operations officer of McCarthy Brands Australia and New Zealand. Fono’s extensive experience includes being an independent curator specializing in Pacific contemporary and Indigenous art, with a keen interest in mentoring emerging artists across various mediums. Fono holds a postgraduate degree in Art & Design from Auckland University of Technology and a diploma in Pacific and Indigenous Arts from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa; and is currently completing an MBA.

 

In addition to his leadership roles, Fono is a successful practicing artist, recognized for his works in private and public collections globally. He serves as a specialized art dealer advisory and consultant, collaborating on exhibitions, festivals, symposiums, and educational initiatives. Fono was a co-judge and curator for the Martin Hughes Contemporary Pacific Art Awards and spearheaded a groundbreaking arts residency program in Samoa focused on cultural exchange and collaboration with CreativeNZ, and the National University of Samoa.

 

Fono is dedicated to his community, engaging in voluntary work as a sports pathway director, coaching elite athletes, and mentoring emerging artists and SME owners. When not immersed in his various roles, Fono cherishes quality time with his family, particularly his 5 grandchildren.
